Dorseyville Middle School eighth grader Annika Urban has been named a winner in the 2014 Broadcom MASTERS National Science Fair STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) competition for sixth, seventh, and eighth graders. Annika was named a second place STEM Award Winner in the Engineering category for her project and she won $2,500 to attend a STEM summer camp, as well as a new iPad. As one of only 30 students from across the nation selected as a finalist, Annika participated in the national competition in Washington, D.C., that included a personal meeting with President Barack Obama.

Annika showcased her science fair project, “The Stethophone,” and competed in the four-day STEM competition October 24-28. Her project allows a patient to record and transmit breath and chest sounds to a physician through a cell phone, allowing for access to treatment at the exact time the patient is having an issue.

Annika was named a finalist in September from among 300 semifinalists and 2,054 applicants. She was chosen as a winner for her science fair project that she completed when she was a seventh grader. Prior to being honored as part of the national program, she won a second place at the 75th Annual Pittsburgh Regional Science and Engineering Fair (PRSEF) in March 2014.
